Meta’s AI Spreads False Criminal Accusations

Meta’s artificial intelligence chatbot repeatedly published devastating lies about conservative filmmaker and activist Robby Starbuck starting in August 2024. The AI falsely claimed Starbuck was a “White nationalist” who had been arrested on January 6, 2021, and even accused him of Holocaust denialism. These accusations were completely fabricated—Starbuck was never present at the Capitol and has never been charged with any crime related to January 6th.

The defamatory statements caused immediate and severe damage to Starbuck’s reputation and livelihood. He lost business opportunities, was denied insurance coverage, and faced ongoing harassment based on the AI’s false claims. Despite the clear fabrication of these serious criminal accusations, Meta’s system continued spreading these lies to users who searched for information about the conservative activist.

Big Tech Ignores Repeated Correction Requests

Starbuck and his legal team at Dhillon Law Group made multiple formal requests to Meta beginning in August 2024, demanding the company retract the false statements and correct its AI system. True to Big Tech form, Meta largely ignored these reasonable requests for months. The company’s arrogance reached new heights when its AI voice feature published the same defamatory lies to one of Starbuck’s colleagues in April 2025.

Meta acknowledged the statements were false but refused to take meaningful action to protect Starbuck’s reputation. Their half-hearted claim of making “enhancements” to the AI system proved insufficient as the defamatory content continued circulating.

Lawsuit Forces Accountability for AI Defamation

Fed up with Meta’s stonewalling, Starbuck filed his defamation lawsuit in Delaware Superior Court on April 28, 2025. The case represented one of the first major legal challenges to AI-generated defamation in the United States, testing whether tech giants could hide behind their algorithms while destroying innocent people’s reputations.

The settlement, reached in early 2025, represents a significant victory for Americans fighting back against Big Tech overreach. While settlement terms remain confidential, the outcome demonstrates that even the most powerful tech companies can be held accountable when they allow their systems to spread malicious lies.
