House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) wrote to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Wednesday asking for any Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) filed with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network about Burisma and its businesses and officials.
Burisma Holdings is a Ukrainian energy firm that hired President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, on its board for several years.
The younger Biden joined the company in April of 2014.
The GOP-led panel has been trying to ramp up its investigation into what Comer has described as a pattern of millions of dollars flowing to members of the Biden family from foreign nationals under suspicious circumstances and the request for SARs, which financial institutions can use to flag possible criminal behavior, is indicative of this. As stressed by the chairman, the probe may help inspire legislative amendments to bolster disclosure requirements and anti-money laundering regulations.
Comer said that If foreign actors targeted the Bidens, President Biden would be compromised, and national security would be at risk; then we need financial information relating to Burisma executives and businesses, which Secretary Yellen must release.
The Oversight Committee issued a press release on July 1, 2020, citing an FBI FD-1023 record from June 30, 2020, which is said to memorialize allegations from a confidential human source of a $5 million scheme involving a foreign national paying six figures to secure favorable actions from Joe Biden when he was vice president—the allegations center on Ukraine.
The Oversight Committee also pointed out that tax investigators did not provide the FD-1023 form, which would have been relevant to the federal investigation into Hunter Biden. This information was provided by an IRS whistleblower to the House Ways and Means Committee.
Attorney General Merrick Garland has denied allegations of political interference in the investigation, which last week amounted to a plea deal on tax and gun violations that could lead to no prison time for the 53-year-old Hunter Biden, who had previously worked as an IRS whistleblower.
Democrats in Congress and former President Biden have characterized the House Oversight Committee’s investigation into corruption claims as a politically driven effort to discredit Biden ahead of the 2024 race.
They would know it when they see it. It’s exactly what they are doing to Trump ahead of 2024.
