  • Similar dangerous electrical products marketed as “energy savers” remain widely available despite previous recalls

Dangerous Design Flaw Prompts Recall

Government officials have issued an urgent recall for the Jia Le Xin 3 Socket USB Hub, a popular charging device sold through TikTok Shop. The Office for Product Safety and Standards identified a critical design flaw that creates a substantial electric shock hazard. The bottom two pins on the device’s plug are positioned dangerously close to the edge, violating minimum safety distance requirements. This configuration creates a significant risk if users attempt to remove the plug while it’s not fully inserted into a wall socket.

“The Jia Le Xin 3 Socket USB Hub has a “serious risk” of giving users an electric shock as it has a “noncompliant plug”, according to the recall notice filed with the Office for Product Safety and Standards.”

The product, which can be identified by barcode 6952640500010 and product number F001U, has been promptly removed from TikTok’s marketplace. Authorities warn that consumers who own the device should immediately cease using it due to non-compliance with two key safety regulations: the Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations 2016 and the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994.

Growing Pattern of Unsafe Electronic Imports

This recall highlights an alarming trend of dangerous electronic devices flooding online marketplaces. Just weeks earlier, an unofficial iPhone charger sold on Amazon faced similar recall action after being linked to fire incidents. That device, manufactured by Chinese company AXIULOO, attracted nearly 6,000 reviews before being withdrawn from sale due to serious safety deficiencies, including incorrectly sized plug pins and failure to meet basic electrical safety standards.

Additionally, the TP-5+1 Hot Air Styler sold through Wowcher has been recalled for similar safety failures, including the dangerous omission of proper fusing in its plug design. Safety experts warn that unfused plugs create significant fire hazards when used in UK electrical systems, which are specifically designed to work with properly fused devices. Consumers who purchased this item have been instructed to dispose of it immediately.

Fraudulent “Energy-Saving” Devices Remain Widespread

Consumer watchdog Which? recently identified another category of dangerous electrical products still widely available despite previous government recalls. These devices, marketed as “energy-saving eco plugs” with claims of reducing electricity bills, consistently fail basic electrical safety testing. Investigation revealed alarming internal construction issues, including poor-quality soldering, excess lead content, and non-standard capacitors that indicate unsafe manufacturing practices.

While major online marketplaces including AliExpress, Amazon, eBay, Shein, Temu, and TikTok Shop have removed specific listings after being alerted to dangers, similar products frequently reappear under different listings. Safety experts emphasize that despite their claims, these devices do not deliver meaningful energy savings and instead introduce serious safety risks into homes. The Office for Product Safety and Standards previously recalled similar devices in 2022, yet they continue to proliferate across online platforms.

Calls for Stronger Marketplace Regulation

Safety advocates are increasingly calling for legislative action to hold online marketplaces accountable for the products sold through their platforms. Currently, these marketplaces often operate as intermediaries without taking direct responsibility for product safety. This regulatory gap allows dangerous products to reach consumers despite clear violations of established safety standards.

Experts recommend that consumers avoid purchasing low-cost, unofficial electronic devices from online marketplaces. Instead, they suggest purchasing from established retailers with physical locations, who typically maintain higher standards for product safety compliance and can be held more directly accountable for safety issues. For those who have already purchased the recalled devices, immediate discontinuation of use is strongly advised to prevent potential injury.
