Star Rob Lowe Opens Up About Empty Nest Syndrome With Children

Rob Lowe recently opened up about how becoming an empty nester reignited the spark in his marriage to his wife, Sheryl Berkoff, after their two grown sons, Matthew (31) and John (28), moved out of the house. The couple, who have been married for 33 years, experienced a shift in their relationship when their sons left home, allowing them to rediscover their connection.

In an interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Lowe shared that while he was initially sad when his sons left, it marked the beginning of a new chapter. “I was so sad. And then once they were out of the house, I looked at my wife and went, ‘Wait a minute, I remember you! You’re hot! And we have fun together,'” Lowe enthusiastically explained. He also joked about the freedom of being an empty nester, noting that he could now enjoy spontaneous moments like grabbing a midnight snack without clothes on.

Lowe reflected on how their relationship was further deepened by this new stage in life, and also shared some insights into their secret to a long-lasting marriage. In a previous interview on the Table for Two podcast, he credited their success to choosing the right partner, calling Sheryl his best friend. He emphasized the importance of forgiveness and knowing which issues are worth fighting over, stating that every long-term relationship goes through ups and downs.

The actor also reminisced about their private wedding 33 years ago, where they tricked their guests into thinking they were attending a casual luncheon, only for them to discover it was a real wedding. Lowe has always been vocal about his adoration for his wife, consistently expressing how important their bond is, both in their personal and professional lives.

The couple’s transition to an empty nest has not only strengthened their marriage but has also given Lowe more time to focus on his professional endeavors and his relationships with his sons. He collaborates with his youngest son, John, on the Netflix series Unstable, while he and his eldest, Matthew, work together on various business ventures.

For Lowe, family remains his greatest priority. He has shared how becoming a father was the best thing that ever happened to him and takes pride in watching his sons grow into successful, independent adults.
