Republican Governor Uses a Story About Her Child to Take a Veiled Dig at Harris

Donald Trump’s former press secretary took an opportunity to insult Vice President Kamala Harris this week, suggesting that the Democrat is incapable of remaining “humble.”

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who previously served as the Trump administration’s press secretary and is now the GOP governor of Arkansas, made the dig at Harris on Tuesday September 17, during a campaign event for the Republican nominee. The event took place in Flint, Michigan. Prior to Trump’s appearance, Sanders emphasized that the most important job she has in life is that of motherhood.

Specifically, the governor said that her kids help her to be “humble” and noted that Harris “doesn’t have” the same situation “keeping her humble.” Sanders made the comment in the context of a personal anecdote she shared of her daughter who was preparing for a father-daughter dance once. The girl apparently told her mom—who was getting emotional when telling her child about how proud she was of her—that she “can be pretty too” one day.

Sanders then insulted Harris, sparking a “boo” from those in attendance. But that didn’t keep her from poking the bear a little more, as she added that one would expect “a little humility” from Harris after “four years of straight failure.” Sanders also emphasized that the “future of [her] kids” depends on the next elected president.

The governor’s comments were made after she referenced the second assassination threat against Trump, which occurred on his golf course in Florida. She said that “God is not done” with the former president yet, citing that as the reason for Trump’s would-be shooter being taken out by the Secret Service before he could fire his rifle from his hiding place in the bushes.

The insults from Sanders triggered backlash from people on social media, who compared the governor’s jab to the infamous “childless cat ladies” comment from J.D. Vance in 2021. Lawyer and writer Amee Vanderpool said that Sanders had gotten “down lower” than Vance for allegedly “shaming” Harris for not having her own biological children.

Chris Hayes, news anchor for MSNBC, also accused Sanders and fellow Republicans of “hav[ing] contempt” for those who do not have children.
