Health Risks and Consumer Advice
The undeclared milk in the pancake mix poses a significant risk to individuals with milk allergies. The FDA emphasizes the severity of food allergies, noting that reactions can range from mild to life-threatening.
“Food allergies and other types of food hypersensitivities affect millions of Americans and their families. Food allergies occur when the body’s immune system reacts to certain proteins in food. Food allergic reactions vary in severity from mild symptoms involving hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms, often called anaphylaxis, that may involve fatal respiratory problems and shock,” the FDA said.
In light of these risks, The Quaker Oats Company has issued clear guidance for consumers. “If consumers have an allergy or sensitivity to milk, they should not consume the product and discard it immediately. Quaker has informed the FDA of this action. Consumers with the product described above can contact Quaker Consumer Relations at 1-800-407-2247 (9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. CST, Monday–Friday),” the company stated.
The recalled product was formerly sold under the Aunt Jemima brand, which underwent a rebranding to Pearl Milling Company. Despite the widespread nature of the recall, affecting 10,000 boxes, Quaker Oats Co. has reported that “No allergic reactions related to the recall have been reported.”
