Oklahoma School Prohibits Student From Displaying American Flag on Vehicle

We all know that schools have rules, but did you ever think we’d get to a place where schools tell students that they can’t display an American flag? Because that’s where we are. And we’re not talking about a raging Blue state, either. This is happening in Oklahoma. Seriously.

A student of the Edmond North High School recently shared a screenshot that appears to suggest that he had been asked to remove an American flag that he had displayed on the rear of his pickup truck.

A post shared on Facebook includes a screenshot of a social media “story” shared by the boy in question. The screenshot shows the classic Ford pickup truck fitted with an American flag on the rear of the vehicle.

“North told me I can’t fly an American flag anymore starting next week so yall send this out and fly one starting Monday,” the caption reads. ‘All Edmond schools.”

The incident quickly caused an uproar among local people who slammed the suggestion that schools would ban flags on students’ cars, with some arguing that it was a violation of their Constitutional Rights. The school, however, has since responded to the claims and insists that they have a longstanding rule that prevents flags of all kinds being fitted to vehicles that park on their property.

Jeff Bardach, the public information officer for Edmond Public Schools, told news outlets that the school doesn’t allow any flags because of the risk of “disruption.”

“You can’t allow one and limit another,” Bardach said, arguing that allowing any flag could effectively start some kind of political conflict.

“It’s been our long-standing practice to not allow students to bring flags.”

What do you think – dumb rule? Fair rule? Or First Amendment rights violation?
