Former First Lady Michelle Obama has launched a new campaign video for Kamala Harris featuring numerous celebrities and high-profile figures. The video features soccer star Megan Rapinoe, actress Kerry Washington, and several others urging people to register to vote and have their voices heard. “Our future is on the ballot. So, are you voting this year?” Obama asks.
The Obamas recently endorsed Vice President Harris, and the former First Lady tweeted that she was proud of her “girl.” Video footage of Harris receiving a call from the Obamas went viral online, and Michelle Obama added a caption saying she endorses Harris because of her positive outlook, sense of humor, and “ability to bring light and hope.”
There had been rumors that Barack and Michelle Obama were not keen on a Harris Presidency as they took over a week to endorse her after President Biden dropped out of the race, but insiders say former President Obama wanted to “do more than make a statement” and did not want to overshadow President Biden’s Oval Office speech, in which he confirmed his departure.
The President endorsed Harris immediately after announcing his withdrawal. The public backing of Democratic luminaries, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Bill and Hillary Clinton, quickly followed.
The Vice President’s campaign appeared to get off to a strong start, but Republicans insisted that she was merely in a honeymoon phase that would soon drop off. Harris has not yet picked her running mate, but analysts have proposed a short-list that includes six, with whom she is rumored to be conducting interviews. These are Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky, Governor JD Pritzker of Illinois, Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona.
Shapiro and Kelly are largely considered the front-runners, representing crucial swing states that Harris hopes to secure to win the Presidency. When she has chosen her running mate, Ms. Harris will begin a tour of the swing states, starting with an event in Philadelphia. When questioned about Harris’s running mate, President Biden said, “I’ll let her work that out.”
Sounds like a real vote of confidence, huh?
