The city council in California’s largest city voted unanimously recently to pursue a criminal probe and lawsuit against the state of Texas in regard to its program that buses migrants around the country.
Los Angeles’ council voted last week on the measure, after yet another bus – the 11th in total – arrived in the city since just June with migrants from Texas. The latest bus that was sent had 42 migrants aboard.
The council’s vote officially requests that the attorney’s office in the city investigate whether any crimes have been committed by Texas’ Republican Governor Greg Abbott with the program. The attorney’s office has also been asked to look into whether the city might have justification for filing a lawsuit against Abbott and Texas.
In total, 435 migrants have been sent to Los Angeles through Abbott’s program, with the first bus arriving within the city limits June 14. The program in all has sent more than 30,000 migrants to cities throughout the country that are led by Democratic regimes. In addition to Los Angeles, this includes Washington, D.C., Chicago and New York.
In commenting on his city’s move to investigate Abbott and the program, Los Angeles Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez said:
“The competition between these Republican governors about who could be more racist, I think, is just an utter failure and shows clearly that they do not have any intention to govern effectively. The callous disregard for lives of these families deserves their full investigation and accountability into the criminal actions of wrongdoing of Governor Greg Abbott.”
Following the announcement from the city council last week, Abbott’s office pointed out to Fox News Digital that Los Angeles is a sanctuary city. In addition, he said that all migrants who board the buses first sign a consent waiver that’s in multiple languages that tells them where they will be going.
Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesman for Abbott’s office, said last week in a statement:
“The LA City Councilmembers are complete hypocrites. In June, they unanimously voted to become a sanctuary city, welcoming migrants to the city. Texas began busing migrants to sanctuary cities like Los Angeles last year to provide relief to our overrun and overwhelmed border communities.
“Instead of complaining about dealing with a fraction of the border crisis our small border towns deal with every day, the City Council should call on President BIden to take immediate action to secure the border – something the president continues failing to do.”
Abbott isn’t the only Republican governor to initiate such a program. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is running for president, has also sent migrants from his state to liberal areas around the country.
Texas’ argument is that other states in the country should share the burden of dealing with the migrant crisis. Yet, the liberal mayors of these cities say they haven’t had any communication with Texas officials.
Karen Bass, the Democratic mayor of Los Angeles, said last week:
“We hear about the buses headed our way when they’re on the way. We have no idea who’s going to be on the bus, how many people it is or what condition they’re going to be in when they get here. Sometimes, they haven’t had any food, barely had enough water.”
