An Italian truck driver reportedly murdered his wife and then pretended to be alive for months using her phone and faking text messages.
Local media claims that Francesca Deidda, 42, went missing in May from the Italian hamlet of San Sperate in Cagliari, southern Sardinia. Investigators think that her husband, Igor Sollai, 43, is responsible for her death.
Text messages allegedly received from Deidda’s phone after her disappearance informed loved ones that she needed space after a romance ended, but she still wouldn’t answer the phone.
After she vanished, she resigned from her position at the contact center where she had worked via email.
Authorities believe Sollai penned these emails and texts after he had murdered and concealed his wife Deidda’s body in order to cover up his crime and make it seem as though Deidda was still alive.
Local media said that the culprit was apprehended due to evidence left by the suspect online, even though the phone itself has not been located.
On May 30, Deidda’s brother and a coworker reported her missing.
Police questioned Sollai why he hadn’t reported his wife missing, and he explained that her brother had.
After immediately ruling out suicide and voluntary separation, the police shifted their emphasis to Sollai since he allegedly provided many contradictory accounts.
Sollai said his wife stated a desire for isolation and went off to be alone to “reflect.”
According to investigators, the pair had been through a difficult period in their relationship before Deidda’s disappearance.
Even though there was no corpse recovered in the case, Sollai was arrested last week on murder charges and is still in prison.
Carlo Demurtas, his lawyer, informed the local media that his client insists he is innocent and that they have not found any proof that his client accessed his wife’s phone or sent texts and emails.
The judge made his decision today: The truck driver will stay in detention despite Demurtas’s campaign for house arrest or release until trial.
