(FreedomBeacon.com)- Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, was questioned by Fox News host Shannon Bream regarding texts he allegedly sent to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in an effort to protest the 2020 presidential election.
Bream cited remarks made this week by Utah’s independent Senate candidate Evan McMullin, who claimed that the sitting senator actively helped plan the effort to recruit “fake” electors and to overturn our election and American democracy.
They’re called “alternate” Electors, and we’re a Constitutional Republic.
Reports show that with less than three weeks until the midterm elections, the only debate between the two Senate candidates took place on Monday. According to a FiveThirtyEight poll, Lee is clearly favored to keep his seat in the Senate.
It was reported last week that Lee claimed to have attempted to find a way to declare former President Donald Trump the winner of the 2020 election rather than Joe Biden in the texts he sent to Meadows.
According to CNN, Lee wrote to Meadows on December 8, 2020, saying that if a very small handful of states were to have their legislatures appoint alternative slates of delegates, there could be a path.
The Utah senator texted Meadows on January 3, 2021, saying he only knew that the President would suffer a loss if we didn’t have the Constitution on our side. And we don’t unless these states comply with state law and submit fresh slates of Trump electors.
Reports allege Lee’s efforts were concentrated on the possibility that some states that Biden won might instead choose Electoral College electors who supported Trump.
He did, however, ultimately vote to endorse Biden.
What’s the problem here? Why would anyone suggest this was a gotcha moment against Mike Lee?
Alternate electors are legal, [read here and here] and the Democrats have used the process themselves.
