Former Fundraiser for Disgraced ex-Rep. George Santos Goes to Prison

In a shocking twist of political corruption, a former fundraiser for disgraced ex-Rep. George Santos will spend time behind bars after impersonating a top GOP aide to fraudulently collect campaign cash.

At a glance:

• Sam Miele, former Santos campaign fundraiser, sentenced to one year and one day in prison

• Miele impersonated Kevin McCarthy’s Chief of Staff to solicit donations

• He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and unauthorized credit card charges totaling $100,000

• Miele agreed to pay approximately $109,000 in restitution and forfeit $69,000

• His case is connected to George Santos, who was expelled from Congress after multiple fraud allegations

Sentencing Reveals Democratic Corruption Target

Sam Miele, who worked as a fundraiser for former Republican Rep. George Santos, received a prison sentence of one year and one day for fraudulently impersonating a high-ranking congressional aide.

Miele admitted to posing as Dan Meyer, who was then-House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy’s chief of staff, to solicit political donations illegally. His scheme included wire fraud and unauthorized credit card charges that totaled approximately $100,000 from unsuspecting donors.

The fraudster appeared contrite during court proceedings, directly addressing his wrongdoing before the judge handed down the sentence. “What I did was wrong. Plain and simple,” Miele told the court, adding, “It was a terrible mistake.”

Wider Web of Democratic Corruption

The Miele case represents just one strand in a complex web of fraud allegations that ultimately led to Santos’ historic expulsion from Congress last December. Santos became only the sixth member ever removed from the House, a dramatic fall for a politician who had flipped a Democratic district in New York.

While Miele’s attorney pushed for leniency based on his cooperation with investigators and willingness to testify against Santos, the judge determined prison time was necessary. Kevin Marino, Miele’s lawyer, attempted to shift blame away from his client, telling the court, “This is what happens when you associate with the wrong people.”

As part of his plea agreement, Miele committed to pay approximately $109,000 in restitution and forfeit $69,000. He also agreed to make an additional $470,000 payment to a campaign contributor.

Santos Corruption Saga Continues

Miele’s sentencing comes as former Rep. Santos faces his own legal reckoning after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The disgraced congressman admitted to stealing credit card information, using campaign funds for personal expenses including luxury clothing and OnlyFans subscriptions, and fabricating significant portions of his background.

Nancy Marks, Santos’ former campaign treasurer, has also reached a plea deal with prosecutors, admitting to a fraud conspiracy charge.
