Major Counter-Terrorism Operation Unfolds

UK counterterrorism units have conducted a sweeping operation resulting in the arrest of eight men, seven of whom are Iranian nationals. The arrests took place across multiple locations including London, Manchester, Rochdale, Stockport, and Swindon. This coordinated action involved two separate investigations, with the primary focus on a suspected plot to attack a specific target in England. The suspects range in age from 29 to 55 years old. Authorities have described this as a fast-moving investigation with extensive property searches still underway.

Dominic Murphy, heading the operation, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating: “The investigation is still in its early stages and we are exploring various lines of inquiry to establish any potential motivation as well as to identify whether there may be any further risk to the public linked to this matter.” The targeted location remains undisclosed for operational security reasons, though officials confirmed it is receiving ongoing support and advice.

Iranian Threat on British Soil

The arrests highlight growing concerns about Iranian-backed terrorism on British soil. MI5 director Ken McCallum previously identified Iran as an escalating national security threat, revealing that British intelligence has addressed 20 Iranian-backed plots since January 2022. These operations have primarily targeted Iranians living in the UK who oppose the Tehran regime. The current UK terror threat level remains at “substantial,” indicating security services believe an attack is likely.

“These are serious events that demonstrate the ongoing requirement to adapt our response to national security threats,” said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper regarding the current operation.

The main counterterrorism investigation involves five men detained under the Terrorism Act on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Four are confirmed as Iranian citizens, while authorities are still working to establish the fifth man’s nationality. In a separate investigation, three Iranian men were arrested in London under the National Security Act 2023, though officials have not disclosed connections between the two cases.

Dramatic Arrests Witnessed by Residents

The operation unfolded dramatically in some locations, particularly in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, where residents witnessed armed officers making an arrest. Kyle Warren, a local resident, described the scene: “I heard a massive bang. There were 20 or 30 police with guns. We’ve seen a man getting pulled out from the back, basically got dragged down the side entry and thrown into all the bushes and then handcuffed.” Forensic teams were later observed examining the property where the arrest took place.

London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that their investigation “relates to a suspected plot to target a specific premises.” The suspects are currently being questioned at police stations across the country and have not yet been charged. Extensive searches continue at multiple properties as authorities gather evidence. Health Secretary Wes Streeting assured the public they would be kept informed as the investigations progress, while maintaining operational security around sensitive details of the alleged plot.
