(FreedomBeacon.com)- Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul didn’t hold back this week when he accused Dr. Anthony Fauci of lying when he told a Senate hearing that the National Institutes of Health did not provide funding for gain-of-function research in the Chinese Wuhan laboratory where the COVID-19 virus is believed to have originated.
On Tuesday, Senator Paul slammed Fauci for his claims and reminded him that it is a crime to lie to Congress. He even gave Fauci an opportunity to retract his statement and tell the truth, handing Dr. Fauci a report that revealed the extent to which gain-of-function research was funded with money from the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Fauci insisted that he had never lied and refused to retract his statement, before shamelessly telling Dr. Rand Paul that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
The problem is…Senator Paul has all the evidence. He referred to a paper published in 2017 that said it was funded by the NIH. The paper discussed findings from research about new strains of SARS that could provide “new insights” into how SARS-CoV originated and evolved, and highlighted the importance of world preparedness for new SARS-like diseases. The research involved the genetic manipulation of viruses to create strains that previously did not exist in nature, which fits the National Institute of Health’s definition of “gain of function.”
However, Dr. Fauci – whose hands were visibly shaking – claimed that the research wasn’t gain-of-function.
“This paper that you’re referring to was judged by qualified staff, up and down the chain as not being gain of function,” Fauci claimed.
Senator Paul accused him of “dancing around” the definition in order to “obscure responsibility,” which got Dr. Fauci in a defensive mode. He said that Paul was implying he was responsible for millions of people dying of COVID-19.

Doesn’t it make you wonder why Dr. Fauci is so desperate to redefine the work done in the Wuhan lab as not gain-of-function? If it fits the NIH definition then why would he need to lie?
…does he have something to hide?
