Musk and Trump Challenge USAID’s Authority

In a bold move that has sent shockwaves through the international aid community, tech mogul Elon Musk has branded the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) a “criminal organization” and called for its immediate dissolution. This declaration aligns with President Donald Trump’s recent actions, who has paused the agency’s funding and described its leadership as “radical lunatics.”

“USAID is a criminal organization,” Elon Musk said.

He’s not wrong – and he knows that the leftists freaking out over it know it too.

Trump, known for his “America First” policy, has given Musk significant power to reform government departments and reduce spending. The President stated, “The United States Agency for International Development has been run by a bunch of radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out… and then we’ll make a decision (on its future).”

“He’s a big cost-cutter. Sometimes we won’t agree with it or we’ll not go where he wants to go…he’s a smart guy. Very smart. And he’s very much into cutting the budget of our federal government,” Trump added.

Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has faced criticism for attempting to access classified documents and secure spaces within USAID and other government agencies. This has led to the suspension of two USAID security officials who tried to block DOGE’s access to sensitive information.

The Trump administration’s actions have severely disrupted USAID’s operations. Hundreds of employees have been fired or furloughed, and foreign aid work has been suspended. The agency’s online presence has been compromised, with its X account disabled and website offline. Reports suggest that Trump might integrate USAID into the State Department, with a formal executive order potentially imminent.

Potential Consequences and Opposition

USAID, an “independent” agency with a $42.8 billion budget, provides humanitarian relief and development assistance to over 130 countries. It also directs money towards foreign entities and organizations designed to undermine foreign adversaries and countries, including sending money from the CIA to foreign news outlets. The potential dissolution of USAID has raised serious concerns among aid organizations and Democratic lawmakers.

Oxfam, a prominent international aid organization, warned, “Dismantling USAID would be a callous, destructive political power play that would have deadly consequences for millions of people living in dire humanitarian emergencies and extreme poverty.”

Democrats argue that shutting down USAID without Congressional approval would be illegal. Former USAID officials have expressed doubts about the State Department’s capacity to take over USAID’s extensive work. The Trump administration’s directive, perceived as a gag order, has limited public statements from aid organizations, further complicating the situation.

But they’re not seeing the bigger picture.

As the future of USAID hangs in the balance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced broader waivers for essential aid programs.

“We don’t want to see people die and the like,” Rubio stated.

But the left won’t listen: they still think shutting down USAID is about stopping crucial aid. The President and his cabinet have already confirmed that it is not.
