Undeclared Allergen Prompts Nationwide Recall
La Fiesta Food Products, LLC has initiated a nationwide recall of its La Fiesta brand breadcrumbs after discovering the presence of an undeclared sesame allergen. The recall affects 8-ounce packages of both “Unseasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado)” and “Seasoned Bread Crumbs (Pan Rayado Sazonado)” that were distributed across the United States from early April 2024 to late January 2025.
The company stated, “The products contain sesame as an undeclared allergen. Additionally, the labels do not include the allergen declaration in Spanish.”
This oversight in labeling poses a significant risk to consumers with sesame allergies who may unknowingly consume the product.
La Fiesta Foods emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sesame run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”
While no illnesses have been reported thus far, the potential for harm remains a serious concern.
“The recall was initiated after discovering that the product contained undeclared sesame. Further investigation revealed that the issue was caused by errors on the product labeling,” La Fiesta Foods said.
Affected products can be identified by their UPC codes and lot numbers. The unseasoned breadcrumbs (UPC#032327000886) were sold from April 10, 2024, to January 22, 2025, with lot codes 26032, 26073, 26082, 26092, 26094, and 26,400. The seasoned variety (UPC#032327000887) was available from August 29, 2024, to January 22, 2025, with lot codes 26094, 26123, and 6,240. The lot code is stamped on the front of the package for easy identification.
Sesame: The Ninth Major Food Allergen
This recall underscores the importance of proper allergen labeling, particularly in light of recent regulatory changes. In 2023, the FDA added sesame as the ninth major food allergen in the United States, joining the ranks of milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans. This addition was mandated by the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act of 2021, which recognized the growing prevalence and severity of sesame allergies.
The inclusion of sesame as a major allergen has significant implications for food manufacturers and consumers alike. It requires clear labeling on all products containing sesame, ensuring that individuals with this allergy can make informed decisions about the foods they consume.
La Fiesta Food Products is urging consumers who have purchased the affected breadcrumbs to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The company has also set up a dedicated line for consumer inquiries, available at 408-326-0487, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Pacific Time.
