Mangione Family’s Nursing Home Empire Under Fire

The Mangione family-owned Lorien Health Services, a Maryland nursing home network, is facing intense scrutiny after numerous accusations of abuse and health violations have come to light. Medicare officials have cited the facilities for a range of infractions, raising serious concerns about the quality of care provided to vulnerable elderly residents.

Imagine being embroiled in a scandal like this only to be dragged into a murder.

At the Bel Air facility, a particularly disturbing incident involved a nursing assistant throwing a call bell at a resident – and it was one of a number of alleged misconduct cases that Lorien Health Services is trying to shake off. The facility has reportedly received 24 health citations over six years, a figure nearly three times the national average, indicating a systemic problem in their operations.

The problems aren’t limited to a single location, either. Lorien’s Columbia facility faced fines for mismanagement and failing to respond to residents’ calls for assistance – neglect that put residents at risk and revealed what seems to be a blatant disregard for their patients’ well-being. At least, that’s what accusers are saying.

The facility was also found to be unsafe, unclean, and in disrepair, with issues like falling ceiling tiles that could cause injury to residents or staff.

Lorien Health Services was also fined for retaining an unlicensed individual on their staff roster and failing to report and return payments for services provided by the imposter.

The controversy surrounding the Mangione family has taken an even darker turn with the arrest of Luigi Mangione, a family member, for the alleged assassination of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in Midtown Manhattan. Mangione, an Ivy League graduate with a polished online persona, was apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized by a McDonald’s employee.

Despite these serious allegations and violations, Lorien Health Services is still considered among the top 19% of nursing homes in the US according to US News & World Report’s 2025 list.

Makes you wonder what the worst ones are like, doesn’t it?
