Candice Bergen Takes Veiled Dig at JD Vance at Primetime Emmys

Actress Candace Bergin took a swipe at Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance while presenting at the Emmy Awards. Bergen described a storyline from her hit 1980s comedy, Murphy Brown, where she played a high-profile news anchor. In one episode, when Murphy realized she was pregnant and decided to raise the child alone, Vice President Dan Quayle publicly criticized her decision. “Today, a Republican candidate for Vice President would never attack a woman for having kids,” she said, adding, “Meow.”

The meow reference is connected to JD Vance’s “childless cat lady” remarks that have followed him throughout his current candidacy. When superstar Taylor Swift formally endorsed Kamala Harris for President after the two candidates faced each other in a Philadelphia debate, she signed her endorsement, “Childless Cat Lady.” Mr. Vance told Tucker Carlson in 2021 that senior Democrats have no stake in America’s future because so many of them don’t have children.

In response to Swift’s endorsement, former President Trump took to his Truth Social media account and wrote, “I hate Taylor Swift.” The singer’s endorsement reportedly prompted over 400,000 people to visit the federal government website and register to vote. At the MTV Video Awards, where Swift won a gong for best video, she used her acceptance speech to plead with more Americans to do the same. “If you’re over 18, please register to vote,” she said.

Trump’s aides and other fellow Republicans had brushed off the Swift endorsement, with JD Vance stating that the singer is a “billionaire celebrity” who is disconnected from the lives of everyday Americans. Several left-leaning commentators quickly pointed out that Donald Trump is a billionaire and a celebrity, while some described Vance as politically tone-deaf and a significant liability to Trump’s campaign.

Former Trump administration communications director Anthony Scaramucci said Vance is actively hurting the former President, and it may cost him the election. “When he loses the election, and they do the post-obituary,” Scaramucci said, Mr. Trump may realize his mistake in not choosing Nikki Haley as his running mate. Mr. Scaramucci said Haley would have won over women voters, moderates, and independents, but instead of going down that route, Trump “went hard MAGA.”
